"I know i have asked the question, "How do I go deeper with God." I think sometimes we get so focused on the BIG things that we miss the simplicity of the SMALL things. I have found that when I have kept my spiritual walk, Simpler, I have actually gone Deeper. Read this blog and you will see where I am coming from" - Pastor Jess

I realize that my “experience” here on earth has been relatively short, but there is a constant question that I always here and am constantly asking myself….”How do I go deeper with God”? Or……”I wanna go deeper”.

Once again, I’m not claiming to be an expert, but here is what I have found in my own life and reading, studying, and watching other saints who have gone on before me; If you want to go deeper in life, live out the truths that you have already obtained.

Sounds simple right….well in theory YES, but in reality, not so much. If it were that easy then nobody would be asking this question. Jesus was constantly trying to make our relationship with him, SIMPLE…

Working on the farm, my father used an expression, “K.I.S.S it son.” I know that sounds bad, but what he meant was…Keep, It, Simple, Stupid.

Sometimes in life we try to make things so hard and complicated, including our spiritual life. MOST of the time Simpler is always better. Take for example: Kitchen Nightmares with Chef Ramsey. I can’t name how many times I have watched the show and he has sat down to eat and he looks at the Menu and usually mutters some explicits and says “Look at the size of this menu”. No wonder they can’t get any of it right, cause they are trying to do too much!

The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking him what the most important law in the bible was. (Remember the pharisees had over 600 laws they “tried” to keep) Jesus, in my own paraphrase told them to K.I.S.S it. It’s not complicated

Matthew 22:34

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

When I have stopped and seriously asked myself this question, it seem to take my spiritual walk to another level.

Instead of asking; What more do I need to do or what Dreams do I need to start accomplishing or how many minutes did I pray or how many chapters did I read this morning.

Just ask:

1. Am I truly seeking you Lord, with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength?

2. Am I loving all those around me, like I would myself? What amends to I need to make and how can I Love on others?

When I ask myself those 2 questions, everything else in life seems to fall in place. Sure, there are tangible things I need to do like read my bible and prayer, but if I can just start by asking those 2 questions then it gives me a good basis to “GO DEEPER”.

I love the book “Experiencing God” by Blackaby. He says in his book that all we need to do is to stop and look around. If we truly believe that God is over everything and is in everything we do, then God is at work all around us. Maybe we just need to stop and ask the question; “God, what are you doing around me, and how can I be apart of it.”

When I have asked that question, God has not only revealed what he is doing around me, but also has asked me to be apart of it. There is NO other place I would rather be.

We live in a day an age when we think we have to “Start” a movement of God, or God is “GOING TO DO BIG THINGS WITH ME” and many times I think God is doing things all around us, but we are too busy DOING or REACHING and not BEING, that we miss what we could be apart of.

If you want to go Deeper with God, then start with the small stuff. Keep it simple and ask the Lord what he is doing around you and how you can be apart of that. You will find in the process that God will reveal himself more and you will feel closer to God than you ever have before. You will in essence, have gone DEEPER.

“Thanks Dad, for teaching me to K.I.S.S it!”

HELP, my marriage is falling apart. Please read this post. It's not the final answer, but this will help you get back on the right track. Remember, LOVE, is about dying to yourself. This goes across the board. Love is hard. Please read 1 Corinthians 13 to know what love really is. But if you need help in your marriage. Please take time out to read this blog - Pastor Jess

To set the atmosphere (Click here)

As February draws to an end, I can’t help but stop and think about Love. Love is a very tricky thing. It’s not that easy, or everybody would be living in perfect harmony and those that want it, would find it. In the Greek there are 3 words for love that we translate to only 1 word in English. The kind of love usually associated with February is EROS. This is the kind of “erotic” (don’t you feel weird for saying that word) love that happens in male-female relationships. It is more than PHILEO love (which is the love you have for friends).

So Men and Woman, Boys and Girls…if EROS (LOVE) is from God, shouldn’t we as Christians be the BEST at showing this kind of LOVE? The answer is YES, but I’m hear to tell you that if that were true then we probably would see less divorce inside the Church than we do. Most statistics say that the percentage of divorce inside the Church is not much if any different than outside the church.

So what do we do? The answer is……LOVE

I know, I know, you don’t want the “PASTOR” answer and those of you that know me well, know that I’m one of the most practical kind of guys out there. If you can’t translate it to everyday life, then it’s probably not worth talking about. As a pastor I can say that I REALLY enjoy pre-marital couseling. Sure that doesn’t do much for those of you who are already married, but hang with me. If we as men and woman would put in as much time keeping our spouse as we did getting our spouse, MAYBE, we wouldn’t have as many of the problems as we do. So here’s what I want to do; I want to take you through a couple of steps that I do in pre-marital couseling.

1. Make a list of the things that you KNOW your spouse LOVES to do and for you to do. (NO, this doesn’t include making a sammich) Well maybe it does if your spouses love language is “Acts of service”

-Some of you that are struggling making this list, it’s probably because you forgotten how to “Woo” him or her.

An amazing resource that I require my premarital couples do is read “together” the book “5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman. Everybody has a differnt love languages and if you don’t know your spouses, chances are you in misery. (Click here to go to the 5 love languages website)

Here is practical analagy:

Charity (my wife) has 2 top love languages.

1. Quality time

2. Words of Affirmation

If I don’t know this and fail to spend a lot of one on one time with my wife, she will be miserable. If I don’t tell her “proud” of her I am and how much that Iappreciate her, she will not feel loved. Taking the focus off of yourself and putting it onto your spouse is the first step. Now, think about that. If you BOTH are living in this state of mind, then BOTH of you will be happy and “IN LOVE”.

The second thing I have my couples do is take this personality test: Now, hear me straight. This is NOT what your talents are. This test shows where your motivations are in life. As a spouse you had better know what motivates him or her and how you can speak LIFE into their life and not tear them down. This test takes literally less than 15 min. to complete and very rarely (acutally I can’t think of one time) it has been way off base. It costs $10 per test, but it will be one of the best $20 you spent as a couple (Along with the love languages book)

Here is a link to the test (Click here)

-Once you get your flag page…Please take time out to go through it personally and with your spouse. If you need help understanding your flag page…Please let me know and I would love to sit down with both of you and help you understand it.

***Start with those 2 resources and really apply what you learn to your marriage. This will not be an overnight “fix”. Marraige is hard and takes a lot of time and work. But it’s worth it to God, for your wife, and for your kids (if you have them)
