  1. Ok Genesis people… I have a question… well, more of an inquiring minds want to know moment. I came across some irony last night in Gen. 10:8-9 talking about the descendants of Ham…
    * Cush was also the ancestor of Nimrod, who was the first heroic warrior on earth. Since he was the greatest hunter int he world, his name became proverbial. People would say, “This man is like Nimrod, the greatest hunter in the world.”
My question is … they say nimrod became a proverbial word, and to us today means something totally different. When I first read the passage I couldn’t help but chuckle at the passage. Did Nimrod play another role later in the Bible that I am yet unaware of? Just wondering how the word today carries a negative meaning? Or maybe I am reading too much into it and they are totally unrelated.
Other than that, I loved being exposed to all of this for the first time. It was like being a child and hearing your Mom or Dad read you Cinderella for the first time. Very magical and life changing.

Amber, that is pretty funny. I never even thought about that. Perhaps we should ask our fearless leader. He might know the answer to that. This is what I found when googling where the meaning came from:

Nimrod- 1. A hunter. 2. Informal A person regarded as silly, foolish, or stupid.

[After Nimrod. Sense 2, probably from the phrase "poor little Nimrod," used by the cartoon character Bugs Bunny to mock the hapless hunter Elmer Fudd.]

“great hunter,” 1712, in ref. to the biblical son of Cush, referred to (Gen. x.8-9) as “a mighty hunter before the Lord.” It came to mean “geek, klutz” by 1983 in teenager slang, for unknown reasons.

Thus it may have come about from the cartoon character Bugs Bunny first used as an expression of pity to mock, which may have later been used as an insult from teenage slang for unknown reasons.

    Who knows though??

Hey I found this so that there is no confusion. I love the examples he gives.

Just because a dog’s tail is cropped, doesn’t mean that their offspring will be born without a tail or if your boy is circumcised your future boys will come out already circumcised, (even though that would have been nice)

Here is another debate. some think that Adam stood for all of mankind and not just the first human being. Here is an article that may help with this:

Found this Old testament timeline. Obviously when it comes to young vs. old earth like we talked about earlier, we are talking about young earth when it comes to timeline. The dates are “guestamates” so you can go online and find all kinds of dates, but at least it will give you a good grasp of the order of the stories and the major characters of the OT leading up to Jesus.

  7. Read thru my chapters & have a question…
In ch 12:14-20, Abram tells Sarai to act as his sister and tell the Egyptians the same thing as well. Pharaoh sends many gifts and the Lord sends terrible plagues upon Pharaoh for eyeing a married woman. My question is this, why is Pharaoh punsihed but not Abram or Sarai for lying? They clearly deceived the people of Egypt. I was kind of confused how this clearly breaks the 10 commandments but is overlooked and Abram goes on to become so famous. Did I miss something that I should have picked up on?

  8. Ok, I have read the chapters & WOW is all I have to say. Whoever is out there reading trashy romance novels & watching HBO should really just open the Bible for some scandalous action. I feel like I just read some transcript for the Jerry Springer show. I guess that there really is hope for a wretch like me. I have so many questions that I really don’t even know where to start.

  9. These chapters definitely contain a lot of material the average person would cringe reading! I marveled at the relationship Abraham had with God that he felt comfortable questioning God’s decision to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Then in the end there weren’t even 10 righteous people in the city for God to spare it. So I guess America isn’t that bad, right? Ok so I’m being facetious.

I continue to see a theme of our lack of faith and God’s continuing faithfulness. Sarai decides to give Hagar to Abram to have a son and then gets jealous. Isn’t that like us? Trying to make things happen on our own instead of trusting God and we mess it up more than if we had just waited for what God had promised. I did wonder why God didn’t call out Abraham for laughing about having a son in his old age, but He called out Sarai for laughing.

@ Lauren…yea it makes you really stop and wonder about Sodom and how evil it really was. I know we have some wicked cities, but I don’t know of many that when a guy comes into town the town sends out a meeting crew quit like the one we see here in Sodom.

At the same time, I see cities where prostitution is legal and men and woman are turning away from natural things and craving things contrary to the way God made things. I see cities that turn a blind eye to protecting unborn children and turn a deaf ear to all the woman and children who are sold into sex slavery. Sodom was a very very wicked city, but it all starts somewhere. Sin to that magnitude just doesn’t over night get to that point. There is a slow and steady progression to get to that point. I just hope we repent and turn away from this wickedness and do what God called Abraham to do…”Walk before him and be blameless”
